The Perfect Wall at the End of the Day (Sunlight Effect)
sheetrock, paint, video
video installation, 24 min (2 min clip)
2006
I've always liked Monet's series of paintings of the Rouen Cathedral. This notion of change in appearance due to long exposure is captured in these paintings - and an awareness of medium - how the paint as well as the sunlight mediates experience. I attempted to make a perfect wall in one of my studio spaces which we referred to as the "raw space". I spent so long looking for little imperfections on the wall's surface and at the end of one tiring day the sun came through the window onto my perfect wall. I sat against the opposite wall and held the video camera in my lap as I watched the sun set slowly. This little video clip doesn't do the piece justice. It needs to projected really large so your breathing can start to sync up with mine as you watch the image move rhythmically up and down. And you need the time and patience to do so I suppose. |
